Hamingja's Indo-European Spiritual Name Generator
KEY & INFO
Early Indo-European languages – or at least when we try to reconstruct them – often had an abundance of letters, like several H, W etc. Most often that relates to how to pronounce the words. Not the least since most IE peoples didn’t have any written language at all, until very late in history. That can make the words look very strange at first sight. Sometimes it helps to ‘skip’ some letters (again, like H & W) that come after other consonants. So for example something like Kwewod – Odin’s shaman – could be pronounced [Kewod] with a ‘thicker’ initial K. So when you get your spiritual name – first read it slowly and see if some letters feel ‘redundant or unnatural’. Not all letters can be skipped – that would change the meaning too much – but read and see what feels right.
This spiritual name generator is based on Proto-Indo-Eurpean words and roots, nouns and character traits. It takes the PIE root for each of the four choices you make. It’s of course just for fun and to inspire people to live more spiritual lives. Taking spiritual names definitely shouldn’t be taken lightly. That should only be done e.g. when taking on a very serious spiritual journey, when one has sworn an oath to achieve something grand – or are given to you when you have achieved something. One should also remember that in pagan traditions it was more common to be given a spiritual name than to take one.
